Last updated 3 September 2026.

This page states the limits of this site plainly, because the subject it covers — your working life when the industry around it changes shape — is one where being vague would do harm.

Not professional advice

Everything here is educational and reflective. Nothing on this site, including anything the chat generates, is legal, employment-law, contractual, tax, benefits, immigration, financial, investment, medical, psychological or therapeutic advice.

This site will not tell you whether something done to you was lawful or fair, estimate an entitlement, settlement, notice period or benefit, review or interpret a contract, or diagnose anything. Those need a qualified person who can see your actual circumstances.

Not a recruitment service

James spent three decades interviewing and hiring. That is background to the questions this guide asks, not a service it offers. This site does not find work, take vacancies, review CVs, refer anyone, or assess your prospects — and it will not tell you your chances either way, because it cannot know them.

The chat is an AI

The chat is an AI system. It is not James, and James does not read or reply to conversations. It is not a clinician, therapist, recruiter, lawyer, financial adviser, or a monitored human service.

AI responses can be incomplete, out of date, or simply wrong. Nobody reviews them before you see them. Do not treat anything it says as fact, advice, or a professional opinion, and do not make an irreversible decision on the strength of it.

Do not delay real help

Please do not put off seeing a doctor, taking legal advice, calling a free debt service, or contacting an emergency or crisis service because of anything you read here.

This site cannot help in an emergency. It cannot contact anyone on your behalf, alert a service, assess urgency, or monitor you.

Alcohol

James's account includes getting sober. It is personal history, not clinical authority and not a recommendation. This site will never advise on stopping, cutting down, tapering, or managing withdrawal. Stopping suddenly can be dangerous — speak to a doctor first.

A personal account is not a prediction

James's experience — leaving an industry at forty-five, getting sober, moving countries — is one person's account of one life. It is not a route, a method, or a recommendation, and nothing about it is a prediction of what would happen to anyone else. He describes contentment as having taken close to fifty years and a complete restructuring, and as being ordinary rather than dramatic when it arrived.

The observations

What actually went describes what James noticed happening to men within weeks of losing a role, in one industry, over one working lifetime. It is not research, not a model, and not a forecast. It describes what has already happened; it does not tell you what will happen to you.

This site does not predict. It will not tell you which jobs will go, what proportion of any kind of work will be automated, when a change will arrive, how long you will take to find something, or what your chances are. Not because the question is unreasonable, but because nobody who answered it confidently in the last thirty years turned out to be right, and a number invented here could change a decision you cannot undo.

It also does not tell you that the market always recovers and you will be fine. James's view is that artificial intelligence is genuinely changing how work is done, so the role you held may not be the role that reappears. That is a reason to be deliberate. It is not a reason to be rushed, and this site will not manufacture urgency to make a point.

Redundancy is a legal process. This site will not advise you within it.

Being made redundant is governed by employment law, and in most countries the time limits for doing anything about it are short and unforgiving. This site says that the process exists and that it has deadlines, because pretending otherwise would be useless. It goes no further, and it goes no further deliberately.

Nothing here is legal advice and nothing here is a substitute for an employment solicitor. This site and the AI guide will not tell you whether your redundancy is fair, lawful or genuine, whether the process was followed properly, whether the selection criteria were legitimate, or whether you have a claim. They will not state or estimate any entitlement, notice period, statutory or enhanced payment, holiday pay or tax treatment. They will not tell you whether a settlement figure is reasonable, whether to sign anything, what a clause means, what a reference may say, or what your deadline is. They will not help you draft a grievance, an appeal or a negotiating position. If you ask the guide to read or assess a document it will decline and say why.

Every one of those is a question for an employment solicitor or a free employment advice service, and it is a question with a date attached. Settlement and compromise agreements usually require independent legal advice before they can be signed, and employers commonly pay for that advice — it is worth asking whether yours will.

This is not caution for its own sake. A wrong figure or a wrong reassurance from a website could cost you money you cannot recover.

Do not put confidential material into the chat

You may already have signed something, or be about to. Obligations to a former employer often survive the role ending. Do not paste documents, agreements or commercial information into the chat, and do not name your employer, colleagues or clients. Nothing you write here is legally privileged, and the guide is not a safe place to store any of it. If you start doing it, the guide will say so once and then carry on with what you were actually working out.

The physical side

This site observes that men in this position often report their sleep, their back, their shoulders and their drinking changing before they notice anything else. That is an observation about what men described, not a clinical claim, not a diagnosis, and not an explanation of cause. Nothing here treats anything. A new, severe or worsening physical symptom is a matter for a doctor, not for a website.

Crisis and support

If you are in danger, cannot keep yourself safe, are frightened of someone, are worried about a child, or are facing a medical or money emergency, please read the safety page. It lists the general routes and the specific services this site is willing to name.
